What I Know About the Common Seadragon

April 11, 2012 By Katie

The following is an overview of the Common Seadragon and an explanation of why you need to know this.

Also known as The Weedy Seadragon-

Common SeadragonNot to confuse you, but there are two types of seadragons. The Common seadragon is a part of the Phyllopteryx taeniolatus family, the only one of its kind.   They are found in central New South Wales around the south coast of Australia to south-western Western Australia.

They can grow up to 45cm in length, which is equal  to 18in.  It is often confused with the leafy seadragon (which I did about 110 times). The difference between the two are one looks a lot leafier than the other. The less leafy one is The Common Seadragon.  When you Google The Common Seadragon they both show up. That later taught me to READ more carefully. I alone did an hours worth of research on the leafy seadragon only to find I was researching the wrong seadragon.

Here is why you need to know this.  The irony of all this knowledge is that I acquired it through my 10 year old son’s project. I found myself working on it with him one minute, then the next minute I could hear him upstairs making shooting noises with his mouth…playing X-box 360 while I was researching the information for HIS project. So I figured if I had to learn all of this – I should make you do the same!

Have you ever found yourself doing your child’s project coming out of it being a freaking expert? I have!
