Celebrating Earth Day?

April 22, 2014 By Katie

This morning I was awaken an hour earlier then I am used to with three very excited kids! They overheard on Nick Jr. that it was EARTH DAY!

So naturally they asked what we were going to do today. I was half asleep and decided my best bet was…yep, Pinterest.  It took me all of 30 seconds to find something I had the tools for to create an Earth Day project.  One of the many reasons I am eternally grateful for Pinterest and its users!

I have attempted to do this project and take pics with some very simple steps so that you can enjoy this project today as we did!  Keeping in mind this can be done any day of the week and not just for Earth Day!

Earth Day

Can I just say I was so worried about the mess this was going to make as I was trying to rush to get this live?  I quickly realized none of that mattered because we had a blast doing this and it took me 5 min to sweep and wash hands! #Supermom

The pics are pretty self explanatory but Ill break it down anyway! Thanks to Dora, I don’t have to rush today!

First, the picture I used from Pinterest as inspiration for this project had toilet paper rolls but last minute I could only come up with one. If you and your kids or just you want to wait and collect be my guest, but I had some leftover paper cups from our annual Easter Party (blogging about that tomorrow) that we used instead.  In my opinion these were easier to work with.  They were able to put their hands in the cup when we spread the peanut butter.

Second, we took our pipe cleaners poked holes in our cups on opposite sides attached them and when all done they looked like little baskets.

Third, we spread the peanut butter evenly all over the cups. We started of by using plastic spoons and eventually used our fingers!!

Fourth step we rolled the peanut butter covered cups in our wild bird feed we had left over from a birdhouse project (you can find that project if you follow me on Instagram).

Lastly, we hung outside for our birds to enjoy!

Side note: I explained to my children during this project the importance of keeping our Earth clean and loving our animals. We shared our favorite things on our planet. I said I love the trees and flowers.  Emerson’s favorite are animals.  Reece’s favorites are water and sand.  And Ryland’s favorites are bugs and Dinos (I had to break his heart and tell him they no longer exist).  I really hope this inspires you to sit down take a few min to teach your children the same!

Homemade Spartan Shield

October 30, 2013 By Katie

I have another quick little tutorial for you today! I’m trying to get everything i do and put it into a photo collage so I can post more often :)

This is a shield I made last minute for my son, Gavin. He is going to be a Spartan! I seriously went to 10 different stores looking for a shield he liked and found one they wanted $20 for…I hate telling my kids that’s too expensive but having a large family & shopping for 8 costumes gets to be a bit overwhelming. So knowing my son, I knew he was going to be happy when I told him lets go pick up a few items and make one of our own for a third of the cost of this one! I LOVE to admit when I said “let’s make our own,” my son got so excited because he knew I rock at this kind of shit!

I got the gold spray paint for $3, the “lap desk” for $3 at Michael’s craft store and had the red paint already at home from a previous project! Any color would do but he wanted red. The pic really explains it all. I just spray painted both sides, let it dry, painted an upside down V with gold glitter paint, let dry again, then outlined the glitter with red. Mind you this is all fabric paint I had used for T-shirt projects over the summer!! Anything will do. After all is said and done, my husband says “all this money for a two hour event?” Yep. The things we do for our kids 😉

I hope this helps & enjoy!

Turning Old Lingerie Into Scarves

May 21, 2012 By Katie

Yes, I mean your old Victoria’s Secret nighties or robes.victorias secret

Over the weekend, I was going thru my basket full of old nighties thinking it’s probably time to discard the ones I haven’t used in 7 plus years so I can start making room for new ones…that fit!

Upon going thru my basket I was thinking to myself, “this one is so cute why haven’t I worn it in so long?” So I put a few aside thinking I’ll try them on before I say goodbye; that way I know for sure I won’t regret giving them up, because I have a tendency of keeping things in thinking, “I used to look good in it, therefore I will again”…(laughing out loud). Just like those size 4 jeans hanging in my closet I know I’ll never get past my badonkadonk EVER again!

Immediately after trying them on I regretted my decision to care why I hadn’t put them on in so long…One was ripped up the side and another had a button missing, and one looked like it could fit my 5 year old.  So me being me, I thought I can totally use this fabric for something else. It was such a pretty pattern to just trash so I started cutting to put into my collection of fabric.

After all was said and done, I saw potential out of this piece

I used it as a head scarf in these pix but have also used it as a neck scarf using the European Loop. Needless to say, this turned out to be a very fun and easy craft project.
